Living with John, by Nellie Kidd Madison

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE :
TIPS FOR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE HOME CARE

Pendleton OR - September 14, 2001

Nellie uses her wits to devise practical solutions to unusual problems. She home cares for her husband John, an Alzheimer's patient, and has for 16 years. The rumors you hear about bizarre behavior are absolutely true. And John's bizarre behaviors require Nellie's inventive responses. For instance:

  • To keep him from exiting out any door, she hides the doorknob with a towel.
  • To keep him still during daily hygiene, she puts an object in each hand.
  • To keep him secure in the car, she slides a map tube over his seat belt release button.

You'll find helpful hints by the dozen in Nellie Kidd-Madison's book, "Living With John: Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer's Disease" Nellie's watercolor painting titled, "Inner Turmoil" graces the cover. PBS television appreciates Nellie's artwork, and featured her in Oregon Art Beat this year. See her watercolors online at bsg-arts.com/jump.htm.
