Comments: Thank you for your work on compiling this information on Alzheimer's Disease. My family started the journey in 12/85 and it continued until 10/96. My mother had the disease and died from it's complications in 10/96. I'm sure, however, that it was a contributing factor to the death of my father as well in 6/95. I hope other people find that the local chapters of the Alzheimer's Association as helpful as our family did.

Comments: This is a beautiful memorial to your mommy. It reminded me of my grammy and what it was like to live with her during her most difficult times and what it was like to finally put her in a rest home. I cried when I looked at pics of your mother. They just make it all the more powerful.. Thanks for sharing and for being an inspiration.. and for making me remember..

Comments: This is a WONDERFUL web site. Your mother would be so proud of you. I too have gone what you and your sister went through, I was a only child. My daughter has set up a web site for her grandmother also, but our story is not a great as your's (about the rest home part) her Web page is http://falcon.cc.ukans.edu/~tbarta/nannie.html I hope you will read her page also. My mother was so dear to me and I miss her everyday. And my guilt will never go away. You see my Mother was abused in her nursing home which lead to her death 2 months later. It has been 4 years this Jan.5, and I can sometimes get through it without crying much, but your page let me know other people have guilt as well. But, people that have not been through this just do not understand how awful disease can hurt the whole FAMILY... Thank you for doing this. Please write us after you see my daughter's page. You have my E-mail address. In Memory of my WONDERFUL Mother.........

Comments: Thank you for being here. My family is begining to wonder if my mother has dimentia. She has not actually been diagnosed yet. However we are confused and scared right now. And so is she. She knows something is wrong but doesn't know what. I am glad that if what we think is happening really is, there is this page to refer to for help coping with care and just plain coping. Comments: My mother also has alzhimers, and its so hard to watch them. Mom worked hard all her life on the farm and even worked outside the home to help support us three kids. My father was wonderful, but the farm just did not support us. I am glad my dad is not around to see her like this. He died in 1966. With mom like this in a nursing home and daddy gone it makes you feel like an orphan. I am married a second time to a really wonderful man and have 2 kids an 6 step daughters, but its not the same . Its an empty feeling. Thank you for letting me say what ive felt for so long. Keep up the good work and someday there will be a cure. It wont help us but it will help someone .

Comments: I appreciate your story. I have read it several times. Usually late at night, usually after I have put my mother to bed, after I have fed and diapered her. I don't know how much longer she will last. It is becoming more and more of a struggle to get enough calories and fluids in her on any given day. Soon I will be faced with the "feeding tube" decision. This weighs heavily upon me. Alzheimer's is a cruel disease. It robs it victims of every ounce of dignity. And for the loved ones of the victim, the memories haunt, and will do so forever.

Comments: Dear Ms. Parrish, What a wonderful tribute to your mother. I am a music therapist and have been working with those diagnosed with presumed Alzheimer diease for the past 7 plus years. It is a tradgey to watch as your family member fades right in front of your eyes into someone else. I'm lucky with the music that I can tap into some people's past lives. I just wanted to drop you a line and tell you what good you are doing for yourself and for others. Take care, Sharon Walters

Comments: Hi, first I want to thank you for visiting my website and leaving nice words in my guestbook. You've done an excellent job here and have lots of great content. I have to be honest and say I couldn't read your journal, you see, I went through a very similiar thing with my dad. I still miss him very much. He had a stroke in '81 and carteroid artery bypass that April. After that he was never the same and he went downhill for the next seven years. He too was diagnosed with Alzheimers. I read your mother's story and it was so similiar to my dad's that it was like you wrote about him. I was with him when he died on July 8, 1988, at age 80, after a massive stroke six days before. It is so sad how Alzheimer's steals a person from themselves and the ones they love. Again, I really enjoyed your website and thanks!

Hello. I just read your mother's story and it hurt. I just wish you all the best, and can tell that's what you will get. You are a very strong person. I haven't lost anyone that I was close to, and I worry all the time. It's a fear of mine. Anyway, the pictures were beautiful, and I'm glad you could share your beautiful mother with me and the rest of the internet. Thank you.

I'm so glad I got a chance to see your site. I think you have done a wonderful job...not only in sharing you --and your mom-- with the rest of us...but also in helping others find places that can help. I lost my mom to cancer so I feel for you...I also volunteer at a skilled care convalescent hospital in my free time. Reading everything on your site, and going to the hospital makes me so thankful for the easy life I live...I know how hard it is to deal with alzheimers patients...and can't imagine what it would be like to be in your situation. I applaud you...best of luck always...and sorry about your mother. Keep up the awesome page...

Comments: This is a wonderful web page. I just happened to find it while I was checking the pick of the day. I am going through this now with my Mother. She was placed in a retirement lodge the first part of November, but she has the tendancy to wonder. The winter months are keeping her inside at the present, but we may have to think of some where else to put her when the better weather comes, unless she settles in better. It's been very hard dealing with this because she had been very active and alert up until just over a year and a half ago. Now she can't remember much of anything other than our family names and things from the distant past. I have bookmarked your sight. I also have two web pages, the one I have added above and one other sports site, but pages like yours mean so much more to people who are going through hard times with family members. God Bless, and thank you for the time and effort you have taken.

Comments: Thank you for being so brave to write your personal story. I am now in tears as I have been trying to "justify" the way my own Mom has been of late. She is set to get a brain scan on Feb.15 but I already know she has Alzheimer's but hadn't wanted to admit it. It's hard to swallow. I thank you for explaining the "distancing" as I know that is what I now must do-I have been deeply hurt and confused by some of the things my Mom has said to me even a year ago when the signs were not as obvious. I am going to have my other siblings who are living elsewhere, to read your site. Many of the things you've written are right on the button. Especially the eating part-whew, I feel relieved in a silly way to know that I'm not the only person who's experieinced this. Thank you again-your site is so complete.

Comments: Brenda: It is late, so I must bookmark this site and come back to it. I can see that you have done a beautiful job with it, a labor of love. I lost my father, Leonard Wolfe, in 1985 to Alzheimer's. He was a wonderful person, very smart and kind. My sister, Carol Wolfe Konek, kept a journal about her experience with his illness, which she turned into a book, Daddyboy, which was published. (I helped with typing.) It was very hard to lose him like that.

Your Home Page has helped me get through this terrible disease with your articles, stories and other links, especially the Alzheimers Association, Youngstown, Ohio chapter. Quite frankly they have become like family to me. My dad's Alzheimers progressed very rapidly. In August of this year, he was placed in a Nursing Home in St Petersburg, Florida. My dad passed away on December 3rd, from pneumonia. Once again Brenda, thanks for your Home Page, and your story. David McElroy

Comments: Wow! What an emotional experience reading your journal. I am 5 years into taking care of my 89 year old mother who is exhibiting sporadic signs of dementia. I did not really know this until I read your journal and was able to identify with some of your situation. I, like you, feel the sense of loss the most. My dad died 2 1/2 years ago and somehow life is not the same. The loss of my mother will certainly make me feel like an "emotional orphan" (a phrase coined by one of my good friends) at 48! I was so moved by your emotional journey that I wanted to thank you for putting it out there. I hope you are taking care of yourself - and enjoying your husband and this very wonderful part of your life. One thing I am trying very hard to learn is that I have to let go at some point - accept what is - and go on with my own life. I am married to a great guy and have 2 children who are out on their own. So I have also been struggling with the 'empty nest' syndrome. All of this takes its toll on us. So - enjoy your life and don't feel pressured to keep your site up to date. As time passes the less you have to visit the site - the more emotionally healthy you are. I wish you well and thank you for your candor and your help.

Comments: Just wanted to let you know that I think your memorial to your Mom is one of the most wonderful things which I have ever seen. Today my husband, Hollis Marshall and I have married 9 years. Hollis has Alzheimer's and unfortunately his children and family do not care for me. I am his second wife and I am so totally overwhelmed with their ugliness and bitterness. It is hard enough to keep moving with someone afflicted with this disease. My husband, Hollis is the kindest man I have ever known and he is the "Tallest Man that I have ever met even though he is only 5 ft. 7 inches tall." We had a beautiful summer in Grand Lake, CO at our cabin. We are back in muggy, yukky Houston and I'm want to escape again to where we have so little stress. Just know that I believe your Mom and all your family and friends are so very proud of you. How did you find the time to work on the HTML and building your Homepage while you were caring for your Mom? JudyP-M

Comments: What a lovely tribute to both your parents, and what beautiful reflections on your time with your mom before she passed over to the other side. I am taking care of my mom now, she is 76 and has just gone through cancer treatment. Your thoughts and poems have helped me regain perspective. It is so very demanding, and easy to lose sight of what is really going on. Thanks so much.

I miss my mother very much and everything is like a dream to me. She died suddenly of a stroke and a heart attack later. Aloha, Lori in Hawaii

Comments: Your pages are an inspiration and are very well done. We have spent the past 6 years dealing with this devastating disease. Like you, we have also put our personal life with Alzheimer's on the Web in hopes it may help someone else and to let them know they are not alone. Best wishes and God Bless.

Comments: Was just looking for some information on Alzheimer's Disease. My mother has been with us since November, 1994 and was diagnosed with the disease several years before that. We have just switched her medication to Aricept from Serzone and are having difficulty with her hurting herself and being very destructive. I have haldol as a seditive, but I hesitate giving it to her because I don't want her to sit and just stare. I'm in somewhat of a situation. Just looking for answers. I hope I can find some here. Thanks.

Comments: I found you through Cool Central (runner-up for Cool Site of the Day, May 21). It is wonderful that you have done this. I am not personally acquainted with anyone who has Alzheimer's Disease, but certainly I know people who are coping with the sadness and stress of caring for a loved one who has this disease. I'm sure your site has been a great resource and comfort to many people!

Comments: My sister and I just moved my mom, age 75, to an assisted living placement in the town where my sister lives. My mom was diagnosed 3 years ago, and within the last four months she had become unable to maintain independent living in her apartment safely. This disease is such a painful one for everyone. Your poems have been particularly insightful for me.

I am a Hospice Family Support Volunteer, and my husband and I do puppet shows for the children's program of our local Hospice. We perform the puppet show for third grade classes in local schools, and the show teaches children how to deal with loss and grief. Thank you for all your work in sharing this useful information.

Comments: Brenda You have the best site I've seen. You did so good by your Mother. I don't know how you went so long without sleep and rest. You have nothing to feel guilty about. I know a little of what it is like to have someone you love that isn't in their right mind as I had a child that was mentally ill and at times was like a stranger. Your poems are so wonderful and all the pictures let us see what your Mom and family and home were like. The midis are so appropriate for the content of each page that it is on. You did a wonderful job all the way through your whole site. I would lik to be able to do something like this for my lovely Mother that was taken from me when she was only 46 and left me with five little children and no brothers or sisters. Today is Mothers Day 1998.My Mom has been gone since 1955 and I still miss her

I though maybe she could go into a adult day care.It might take some time, to convence her to go.But it won't hurt, to try. It was nice to read your story. It helps me to know,I'm not alone!

Comments: I am only 14 and not yet have had to deal with the pain of losing my parents...but a few years ago my grandmother died. I did not see her since I was 3 and she died when I was 10. When I did go see her at that young age, she didn't remember me very well! I was scared! All the times we called, she couldn't remember us that much. I don't see my grandparents very much at all, and when I do I am thankful that they are mostly in good health! I think this is a wonderful page and a great subject. Not many people realize the pain and agony yet special feelings who get when you lose a family member or when you grow old! I am glad and happy that you have chosen to put out such a wonderful page. The poems are wonderful and I am writing one right now for my Language Arts project we are doing on seniors, I would love to send this in to you! All love, Katie
