Comments: Wow!!! What a truly amazeing person you are. You should feel wonderful about taking care of your mother. When she looks down on you from heaven she must just burst with pride, to have such a specail daughter that stood by her side. There should be more people like you in this world... Love, Carla

Comments: Brenda: Thank you for sharing your story and lovely website with us. It is difficult for many to understand that taking "time out" from a pursuit to be with a loved one during a difficult season of life brings joys to us that we could never have imagined. I understand because I, too, am a caregiver...just over nine years now. I've learned some of life's most valuable lessons during these years. Thanks again, and God bless you. Janell Brock

He has some kind of dementia- a very bad short-term memory loss, plus he has asthma. Look forward to coming back to read more. Thanks for your contributions to the Web!

Comments: You are a very remarkable woman to have taken the time out of your own life to devote that time to your mother. Alzheimer's is such a devastating disease........one day the person you know and love so dearly no longer knows who you are....and that hurts so very much.

I'm hearing from World Wide Pictures that the response to the film of the same title, inspired by my book, has been phenomenal! I am so pleased to have been a small part of such a wonderful production. A Vow To Cherish (film) has a wonderful new web site worth looking at at www.wwp.org. Thank you again for your kind comments on this site. What a blessing this site must be to those dealing with Alzheimer's. Deborah Raney Author, A Vow To Cherish

Comments: Thank you for taking the time to keep this journal and put it down for other to read. I have been taking care of my mother for 5 years now, but she has been really bad only since Oct. 98. As I read parts of your journal, it was as if I had written it, it was so much like my mother. She hasn't known any of us since last January. I'm 43 and my mother is 87. I have two teenagers. My mother lives with us, but my 2 sisters help with her during the day when they can. I've always thought since all of this began that I would be able to take care of my mother until the end, but it is getting increasingly hard. I'm beginning to wonder how much longer I can continue. I cried all through your section about the nursing home and the decision. It is just what I am going through now. Thank you again for sharing you story with others. It helps to see that others have been through the same thing and can understand what I am going through with this terrible disease. I feel so sorry for my mother that it is hard to not cry all of the time. She is in a terrible prison that her mind is holding her captive in and there is nothing that I can do or say that will give her any relief. This sight has helped me more than any other I have seen.

Comments: You page brings back a lot of memorys to me, that I will never forget. My motherinlaw hade Alzheimeris Des. She was so specil to me. Even tho I was at the time just her sonalaw she would really imbarrise me. When all would get togeather, she would allways come up and put her little arms on my shoulders and tell them all, that I was the best sonalaw she ever will have. Well shes gone now. I often think what she would of thought about the way her daugher has done. I'm really glade she wasn't here to see it. GOD rest her sole. Her hub. would beat her trying to make her quit wetting the bed after she was so sick. But he will get his reward in hell some day. I'm sorry for taking your time up like this. I'm nothing special, just a feller with a heart. Willie

Comments: What absolutely wonderful pages. Your love for your mother certainly shows. My 96 yrar old mother has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and is in a lovely nursing home in Hawaii, ( Hawaii has been her home for 30 years). She is very content and loves her nurses. She does some of the things you describe in your pages. She has difficulty speaking but still knows me and says enthusiastic yeses and nos to questions. I love her so much and am pleased that she is comfortable and content in the nursing home. When you have a moment, please visit my home page and I would appreciate it if you would sign my guestbook. I thank you for your pages. God bless

Comments: Hi! I am Kenna. I am at Freshman in highschool. In health class I have to do a report on Alzheimer's Disease. I chose this topic because in 1997 I lost my granfather "Sunny" to the disease. I sit here crying while writing this because it's so so sad. My grandfather was a wonderful father to 8 girls and 1 boy. A grandfather to 26 kids. Even though I was only around 6 when he was diagnosed I still remember watching him trying to do this, but sometimes it didn't look right because of this. I remember seeing my grandpa lying in a hospital bed for years at home with his wife. I know my grandfather is in heaven now, and that is where he belongs.....I love you grandpa, I wish you were still with us... ~Kenna

Comments: What a wonderful tribute to your mother. Your story could be my story. I cared for my mother for 1 1/2 years before finally having to admit that I could no longer do it and placed her in a nursing home. She was there for 8 months before she passed away in Feb. of this year. No one but no one could ever understand the effects of this disease until you have been there yourself. I was very afraid that I would loose my father during the course of my Moms illness. He was so physically drained. When we put her in the nursing home he visited twice a day (I limited myself to once a day). We were very active in her care while she was there. Sometimes I look back on the past two years and wonder how any of us made it through. But I will say that I have no regrets over any of the choices we made during that time. It was the very least one could do for a mom or dad. It isn't for everyone I understand that but if at all possible take the time to do it. You will be forever greatful in the end. I have already done the Alzheimers walk in Lansing Michigan. This was my first year of walking. (Lansing has only had the walk for two years) I was proud to walk with so many caring individuals! Thank you so much for your site. I enjoyed myself here a lot!

I think every body should learn all they can about , JUST IN CASE they are faced with it. I made so many mistakes, of which I have learned about now. Many of them made his life worse, but God understands and helped me. Thank you for having a place people can learn about the disease!!!

We have found her a beautiful home for assisted living where she is happy. One sister and myself visit her every day and try to bring things in and talk to her to keep every thing as normal as possible. She is a very precious lady as your Mother seems to have been.May God's Blessings fall upon you for the rest of your life! Sincerely, Barb Black

Comments: Thanks for your wonderful site. I have only just begun to read it----will have to come back and read more, a bit at a time. My husband and I are in the process of moving to Denver, CO from Kansas City, MO to move in with my father, who is in the very early stages of AD. I am starting to learn all I can about AD, as I will be my father's main caregiver for as long as need be. We are hoping that our being there for him will help him to be able to stay in his own home for much longer----being right there will also ease our minds too, instead of 600 miles away! Thanks so much for your candid sharing---I know there will be much which is helpful to us in the future. God bless you!

Have siblings only a few miles away, but they are to busy to help. They have not visited or sent her any cards in four years. They blame me for all that. But just going through your pages of memories and photos has made a stronger person of me. I have soooo many memories to cherish from these 4 years. Take care, Bless you.....Carol

I help out along with my sister. My mom does most of the caregiving. It is difficult on her but we all three look at this as a time to help out and to grow closer together as a family. Since I'm the one living with her she doesn't recognize me as her eldest daughter and wonders why I never come to visit her. We also walk together, nap together, I read to her and right now she is asleep with a calming CD playing just on the other side of her bedroom wall. I am having a very sad night tonight though, I, myself am disabled and I was told today by my physician that my health could no longer permit me to care for her. I am facing the inevitable decision of placing her in a nursing home and it is breaking my heart. Your web page, tonight, is the saddest yet most heartwarming I have ever viewed on the web or anywhere. Thank you so very much.

Comments: I, too, am at the present a caregiver of a very precious Mother with Alsheimers. This has been the most very special time in our lives as Mother and daughter.

I have read a few books in which Alzheimer's robs some of the characters of their memories and I have felt a fear of having it happen to me. My memories are so precious to me - the things that make me rich- and I would be very scared to be in that darkness of partial familiarity. Thank you for sharing this site of both personal and resourceful nature. ~Kori

My Mom is in the beginning stages of some sort of dementia. She knows it, but tries to hide the fact that she forgets everything - her short-term memory is all but completely gone. It scares me to think of what she might be like in one year from now. Thanks for putting a smile on my face - your web site and tribute to your Mom is so lovely. She certainly did a wonderful job raising a daughter like you!

Comments: Oh how I enjoyed your story about caring for your most precious mother! What a moving story it was! You and your sister provided the most ultimate love in caring for her. I too, am a care-giver for my mother. She is 83 years old and had a stroke several years ago. I quit my job to care for her and have never regretted it. I am just fortunate that I don't have to work and have the support of my family. Mom fell this past week and broke her hip and arm. She is in the hospital and I am not quite sure what kind of care you will need when she is released. But I am going to do everything in my power to bring her back home.Fortunately, mom's mind is very good and I thank God for that every day. Your site has been an inspiration and you have provided wonderful links! I wish you the best with your life and God will truly bless you for the time you spent with your mother. Just another little note....my mom was also born on September 25th. Take care and God Bless.

It has been a long hard road and yes you are right the good times far out number the bad. I want so very much for my Mother to be with me I know this is selfish but I hate to lose her. She has been bedridden for the last 18 months and can no longer even turn her head. Sometimes when I talk to her I think she hears me. Its so important to give alzheimers patients lots of love and to make them know they are loved and important.I am truly glad I have been able to keep her at home.God Bless You.

She does not have Alzheimer's, and I am very fortunate that so far her mind is just fine. Her health is very poor, however. She has severe CHF and rheumatoid arthritis and it is very stressful and hard at times to cope with her illnesses. I am so proud of you for the time you gave up in your life helping your mother. I don't know if I would have lasted as long as you did. Thank you for such a wonderful afternoon reading your journal. May God richly bless you for your care and concern for your mother! If your mother would have been able to, she would have expressed her appreciation for all you did for her. May the good memories help you find peace and contentment. Sincerely, Carla

I liked reading your story because people keep saying "yeah I know what you mean" but I think to myself "no, you don't understand, this is hard". But I guess you do know exactly what we are dealing with. My grandmother has 9 children and yet we will probably have to put her in a home. I'm scared for her. It breaks my heart to see her in this state but those times that she is lucid are worth it. Especially when we talk about God. So thanks for sharing this with everyone. I'll point my family memebers to this web site also. Regards, Vickie Griffith

Comments: Today is May 18, 1999, and is by far one of the worst days of my entire life. I am a 4th grade teacher, and when I left school day I arrived home to find my father and mother. Dad had just returned from a doctors appt. where he received some disturbing news. He was told that he was possibly in the first stages of Alzheimers. I feel so alone right now. I feel like my world is caving in around me. I wasn't sure what to do with myself, so I decided to return to school to surf the net for info. about this disease. I guess hoping to find some bit of information to confirm to me that this IS NOT what is wrong with my dad. He just celebrated his 50th birthday. What will we all do if we lose him to this disease? I can't imagine life without my dad.

I recently lost my mother on February 22, 1999, and am finding it difficult to see the Mother's Day Cards and messages. This makes me realize how much I miss my mother, eventhough she was not talking or able to know anything during the last few weeks of her life. Thank you for taking your time for making such a lovely reminder of your mother.

Comments: I happened to log onto your website while searching the web for sites dealing with grief. Of all the sites that I have found, yours is by far the most impressive and informative. You are to be commended. I recently lost my son in auto accident and have put up a memorial for him on the Internet And in so doing it is becoming a place where others may post memorials to their loved ones. I would very much like to link to you and would like for you to take a look at my site and possibly include it in your listing of memorial sites.

Comments: Brenda, I just wanted to say thanks for your kind words and sites for more information for me. My heart breaks when my Mother cries because she can't remember where she lives (she lives with my husband and me), where the bathroom is, or where her bedroom is, and she can't do the things she used to do. She is very strong willed and stubborn at times. She thinks she can do anything but when she realizes this is not possible, and she has to give in, she becomes frustrated and cries. I have put her in God's hands, she is His child, and I know He will take care of her. I pray for my strength and have asked God for healing of my mind and God's patience. I have been blessed with God's patience but feel it has been leaving me lately. I get very frustrated also. Tthe days are long but the Adult Day Care Center is a godsend to us. Mother is in very good hands there. I will keep you informed of hers as well as my progress. I have looked into a few nursing homes for Mother but don't feel this is necessary right now. She is doing okay. I know the day will come when this decision will have to be made and I dread it. Take care and God bless you. Ginny Simon

Comments: Hi...my Dad is an Alzheimer's patient in a nursing home. Fortunately for me, his deterioration became rapid at the point where I was considering moving in with him, and I was spared the type of ordeal you describe in your journal. Nonetheless, watching his decline in the nursing home is painful.

Comments: I am sitting here looking at your homepage and my heart is so heavy and I can't stop crying. My Mother is 87 years old and has moderate Alzheimer's. I want so much for her to be better, but I know that is not an option for her..I love her so much and it hurts so badly to see her struggle to remember things she can't. Mental illness is alive and well in my family and I just don't know where things will end. I have a daughter who suffers from Mental Illness, a 7 year old grandson who suffers from Tourettes syndrome and ADD/AHD plus other mental illnesses which seem to appear. I suffer from some sort of depression which usually comes out when things around me fall apart. I thank you for your site. Your Mother's memory is also a great tribute to you. There is no greater love than that between a Mother and Daughter. I know that to be true. I am scared about the future. Right now my Mom is going to an Adult Day Care facility four days a week. She is very healthy and enjoys her life and gets very frustrated when she can't remember things she may have done just a few minutes ago. She loves to sing and I am recording her voice for the future. I know some day I will have to think of her future and what I can do to keep her safe. I don't know anything about nursing care and have put that thought way back in my mind.. She was living with my sister for six months and then with me for six months. She now will be living with my husband and myself because there is no one to take care of her in Florida (my sister travels a lot with her job and can't be responsible anymore). She is heartbroken also. My Mother has a lot more people, here in Pennsylvania, who can visit with her and take her places and even babysit for me and my husband when we need a break. Once again, thank you very much for sharing your Mother's and your stories. Memories of the past will always remain in my heart of my Mom & Dad. They were wonderful parents. My Dad died 5 years ago from Colon Cancer and Prostrate Cancer and a Cancerous tumor at his stomach. He was 85 years old when he died and I miss him terribly. Ii am starting to cry again and will have to stop this message. Thank you!!

Comments: Brenda, Thank you for this wonderful site. It brings warmth and love to us all, and lets us know that we are not alone in our role as caregiver. I feel honored to be able to say I know you, and thank God for all the many ways in which you have helped me over the past two years. But most of all, I am thankful for being allowed to get to know you better through the Passage List. God Bless you for all that you do each day. Kate
